TSP's Adam Johnson took the B race win. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 31st July *Andrew Roche was fastest in Wednesdays 10 mile time trial with Mark Christian in second and Tom Black in third. First old git was Dave Taylor in 5th place. Incidentally, Ged Power was busy proving the point that you don't need to train if you spend lots of money on a new steed by completing the course in an amazing 24.29, only 2 places behind (90 year old) Peter O'Shea. The results are here. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 24th July *Due to insufficient entries MVW has cancelled the Barregarrow 50 Mile Time Trial Sue to be held this Sunday, July 27. This weeks Bikestyle handicap was won by Johnny Cregeen with old timer Gary Mazzone in second place. The results are here. It was a
good race with the scratch group making good progress through the field with
Peter Gage MRC coming up trumps in the dash for the line from Andy Cook MVW
Young guns Thomas Mazzone TSP and Adam Johnson TSP took the next places both
sprinting well amidst some fast finishers. Graeme Hatcher
took 5th having sat up when he realized that rather than lead out Rob
Dooley he actually dropped him with about 70 meters to go!
* Reports that lead out man Graeme Hatcher sat up after dropping the Team Bikestyle Sprinter are probably not true. Unless of course, they are. Results here _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 7th July Experience triumphed over youth in yesterday's Colin Nelson Memorial Mountain Time Trial with Gianni Epifani (MVW) taking the win in 1 hour 31 mins and 48 seconds from Graeme Hatcher (MVW) and Dave Taylor (MRC). Tom Black was the best of the juniors in 7th Place while 'in-betweenie' Rob Dooley came home in 13th Place. It would seem that one nameless rider failed to negotiate the right hand turn at Ballacraine and was last seen heading off towards Peel. If Bubbles should be found, please return him to Jim Cottier. The results are here. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 4th July *Sundays Mountain Time Trial start sheet is here. Since Rob Dooley is off last, if he catches me on the road then there is a tenner to the charity of his choice! *Results from Wednesday's 10 mile time trial are here. Dave Taylor and Gianni Epifani restricted the juniors to a one, two this week with Tim Kennaugh taking the win from Tom Black. There is hope for the old folks yet! _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 29th June *Week 9 of the Manx Telecom sponsored 10 mile time trial league was won by Mark Christian. The top 4 finishers were all from the junior ranks, illustrating what an excellent job is being done through Team Isle of Man. Best of the Wheelers was Rob Dooley in 7th place. Not bad for a rookie time trialist! The results are here
*The report from Thursday's Bikestyle Handicap Road Race from Steve Shimmin: Top 4 all under 16!! Weather was improving throughout but strong winds down coast to Cronk. Jonathan Cregeen led the field home with a perfectly timed sprint. Look at the top four!! Testament to the fantastic youth policy incorporated within Manx cycling. The race came together slower than expected with the timing gaps set in favor of a ‘scratch group lead out’. This did not transpire due, once again, to tactical errors from the most experienced competitors in the field. When will they learn that they cannot ‘sit up’ when the lead group is in sight!!! They must work until the whole field is together and then commence their ‘cat and mouse’ games. The win was justly deserved by Cregeen MRC, who timed his sprint perfectly from ever improving Wolstencroft, Sanderson and Haddock (all TSP). All have acquitted themselves superbly to mixing it with the more experienced competitors. Veteran Dave Bell continued his spell of good form in 4th with top 6 made up by Vet Mountain Biker on ‘a day out’ Julien Corlett. First of the ladies was Caroline O’Neill who rode a well timed tactical race with Laura Wasley finishing half a wheel down. Dave Glover made amends for his disappointing first outing with a solid display and Mark Lawrence continued his series of good results. Andrew Roche, who drove mercilessly throughout, led the charge of the scratch Group with Tim Kennaugh on his wheel. Overall a great victory for Cregeen and continued disappointment for the ‘scratch group’ who appear to continue to under estimate the strength of the other competitors. Congratulations to all, the standard of competition continues to be driven upwards. The results are here _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 24th June The following report from Peter O'Shea: Jack Wolstencroft wins his first Road Race. Despite the appalling weather over the weekend, there was sufficient decent weather about to hold the Handicap Road Race, promoted by Manx Viking Wheelers, on Sunday morning. The race was run over the Tour of the North course, starting on the Burmah Road, through Andreas, Ramsey and then Bride. The riders were greeted with a slight spitting of rain and a brisk West South Westerly, thankfully providing a push up Bride hill. The race was split into four groups, separated by 6, 4 and 2 minutes respectively. From the start, the leading group of three riders, Jack Wolstencroft(TSP), Warwick Sanderson(TSP) and Laura Wasley(MVW), knuckled down to the task well and began working together to keep the following groups at bay. After the first lap the gap between the lead group and the first of the followers was reduced to about 4½ minutes, with the next group some 2½ minutes further back. Graeme Hatcher(MVW) attacked the final group on the climb and had a 30 sec lead at the end of the first lap. He continued his solo effort and managed to catch the group in front of the last group on the third lap. The lead group lost some more time, but they continued to work well to mitigate any gain the other groups were making. At the bell there was still 3½ between the leaders and the next group, which contained riders from the second and third group at this stage. It looked very possible that the leaders were going to hold out and the battle for the remaining places could be down to a bunch sprint. Hatcher had other ideas and went off the front. Wasley lost touch with Wolstencroft and Sanderson on the last climb, leaving the two young riders from TSP to contest the finish. Wolstencroft had the greater strength at the finish and pulled away from Sanderson in the last 100 metres. Wasley was third and Hatcher came in fourth. The bunch sprint, some 3 minutes back, was won by James Smettem, who was fourth. Newcomer to Manx Cycling, Scott Morgan(MRC), had an excellent race holding on to the back of the main bunch to come in 13th. The scratch group rolled in another minutes behind. Great race was had by all. Many thanks to the marshals and officials for their help _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 13th June *Race 2 Bikestyle Handicap Series:
DATE 12 June
2008. 46 riders
started 10 retired. A good race completed in hard conditions with a very strong
headwind in the finish straight.
Posse leader Peter Gage took the
sprint in the scratch group who just failed to pull back the leading group
finishing 10 seconds adrift.
Round 2 results here. *Week 7 of the Manx Telecom sponsored 10 mile time trial was won by Mark Christian with Tim Kennaugh second, Tom Black third and Chris Whorrall fourth. Paul Kneen was the best of the seniors in fifth place. The results are here. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 11th June Jim Cottier has kindly arranged the following in the light of the Colin Nelson not taking place: As the Colin Nelson is not taking place this coming Sunday 15th June why not spice up your club run with an ad hoc Hill Climb. I might even start a cycling bolg. *Belated happy birthday for our own Colum O'Shea who reached the grand age of 18 on Friday. Old enough to drink now. So no change there then! 17th April. *Results for last nights 10 mile time trial league on the Ramsey course are here. *Thankfully, we found an organiser for the Tour of the West. Many Thanks to Phil Knights for taking on the job. Thanks also to everyone else for Marshalling, providing First Aid, Time Keeping, signing on, Commissaire, lead cars, and travelling marshals. A job well done and good racing as well. Congratulations to Cav for winning the Senior title, Juan Kinley for the Vets, our own Colum O'Shea for Juniors, Adam Johnson for the youth and our own Eve O'Hare for the Ladies Title. *We now need an organiser for our next event, the Penrice 25, on Thursday 22nd May. This is an evening event. As it is a time trial, there is a bit less organising required to get this up and running compared to a Road Race. The paper work is mainly sorted, the main items that need sorting are Marshalls, Timekeepers, Signing on and signage placement and retrieval. Due to the closeness to TT we are using the Northern Plains course. As with our latest event, if no one volunteers to be the organiser, the event will be cancelled. For your information, the organiser is entitled to free membership to TLI, but it still needs to be applied for. Can you reply to mvw@manx.net by 30th April. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 8th April *The results from Sundays Isle of Man Road Race Championships are here. Mark Cavendish took the A race while the B race spoils were taken by Adam Johnson (TSP). Colum O'Shea was the top MVW finisher in the A race while Gary Mazzone was best Wheelers placed finisher in the B race. In the same race, Gary's son Tom had some difficulties, but Gary did the respectable thing any good father would do, and promptly rode away leaving Tom to do his own thing! _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ *Dear Members The next MVW's event on the cycling calendar is the Tour of the West on Sunday 13th April. We desperately need an Organiser for the race to arrange marshals, signage, refreshments, contact swimming pool re HQ etc. Signing-on is done by Ian Brand, but Nigel Harrop needs the name of the Organiser re paperwork for the event. If we could get a couple of volunteers e.g. one to put out the signs and one to organise the marshals / HQ this would be even better. Is anyone willing to help out? If we do not get an organiser for this event it will have to be cancelled

If you can help please contact Ian at brandy@manx.net. Saturday am Peel and pm Ellerslie on closed roads. Sunday am onwards Ramsey North Promenade on closed roads.
