Ballantyne Trophy RR 05 After having his race on Saturday cancelled Manx Viking Wheelers – Shoprite ClubMann rider Graeme Hatcher lined up with a full field in the Ballantyne Trophy RR a 60m race around the Cheviot Hills. The field lined up in bright but very windy conditions, Hatcher was aware that the wind would pay a major factor in this race given the nature of the course and attacked in the first cross wind section taking an old Middridge CRT team mate Iain Jones with him. On the increasingly taxing course it was clear that Jones was struggling and Hatcher decided to continue alone taking the first KoH prime after 20miles. With the bunch now at 40 seconds with a chasing riding in between Hatcher eased to allow Rutland CC rider Richard Gouldebourne to join him at the halfway point. An agreement between the two riders saw Hatcher and Gouldebourne share the remaining KoH with Hatcher doing the majority of the driving. Over the last climb with 18miles to go the lead had dropped to 1min30 with 9 riders chasing. With the wind at their backs the two leaders pressed on but the chasers continued to close the gap. As the leaders entered the last kilometre the gap was down to 5 seconds but some strong pulls from the two leaders saw them surviving for the win with Gouldebourne taking the verdict from Hatcher with the chasers accredited with the same time.
