Race Report

An overcast, grey, cool morning greeted 26 Riders on the start line of the Tour of the West in Peel on Sunday morning. Two races were run over the 15 mile Creg Willy’s Course. The B Race, over three laps, set off five minutes before the A Race, over five laps, to give the B riders a chance time to climb Creg Willy’s. In fact, it wasn’t until the second climb that the A and B races merged. On Creg Willy’s, as usual, some riders lost touch with the leading group and spent the remainder of the race on a solitary ride for the most part.

At times, it appeared that the B Race was moving somewhat faster than the A. The B race mainly contained the younger riders and they are quite use to racing out of the blocks from the start. The A Race took a more measured ride up to the first climb, but then cranked up the pace on the climb, making it very hard for some.

There were a couple of attempts to race off the front. Ashley Whipp attacked on the Peel-Kirk Michael Coast Road during the first lap of the A Race, but was caught on the third climb.

With one lap to go in the A Race, Peter Kennaugh Jnr, showed his strength and pulled away from the bunch. Elliot Baxter and Arron Livesey took on the chase. With the conditions deteriorating at this stage, it was proving harder for some of the riders and many pulled in at the end of the fourth lap. The leading riders stayed much the same to the line with Kennaugh recording an impressive win, with Livesey and Baxter, second and third respectively. Young Mark Christian, 15, had an impressive ride completing the 78 miles in 7th.

The B race became somewhat tactical and Matt Looker won the day at the finish with Alex Kinvig second and Sam Looker third.
