1st December

*The IOM Sports Council has been working in conjunction with representatives of the IOM Cycling Association over plans to try and establish an outdoor cycle track at the Onchan Stadium.

The Onchan Commissioners requested notices of interest and have now called for interested parties to present a Business Case before the 18 December 2006.  Council believe that it is absolutely essential to fully consult with the Cycling Association, all Clubs and all persons interested in the promotion and development of Cycling on the Island.

The CA would therefore invite all such bodies and individuals to a meeting at Cronkbourne Pavilion, Tromode, next Monday, 4 December with the building opening at 6.45 with the meeting scheduled to commence at 7.00pm

The CA would hope that as many people as possible can attend to discuss this very important issue and therefore we would like you to extend this invitation to as many members as possible.

21st August

*The Bikestyle handicap held on the 10th August was a fantastic race with 49 riders on the start line! It was a really hard night with strong winds where the long markers completed the full race distance and were only caught when virtually in sight of the finish. The result is here. John Marchment, Neil Bellhouse (and maybe Ian Gale?) came down when winding up for the sprint. Neil felt he was ‘on for it’- alas to no avail. That’s cycling Neil! Gary Hinds won the gallop, you know what this means don’t you? He will be living off this victory for the next 15 years! Seriously he did show a good turn of speed and good tactical nouse to take the victory but it was close! Sam Looker was right there and getting stronger as Hinds was fading.

Steve could not place Ian Gale. If anyone feels they have been misplaced please email Steve to let him know.

Thanks to all marshals and helpers and clubs who organised the events this year. A big thank you to all who entered and took part. Sorry the handicapping was a little astray this year I think I got right in the end though !

*The final results table is here. The points table shows that the ‘old hands’ cannot be discounted with Fletcher, Aspell and Gage featuring prominently while first lady was Laura Wasley in her comeback year. Newcomer and Juvenile Tom Craine…what a first season!

*The rescheduled 10's League week 5 result is here In 'near perfect' conditions Andrew Cook (MVW) took the victory from Graeme Hatcher (PTT) and Gianni Epifani (MVW).

*The Penrice 25 mile time trial was held on 17th August. The results are here. Andrew Cook (MVW) won.

*Provisional results for the bikestyle 6 are here. Can anyone who feels they have been misplaced to contact Steve Shimmin by email at steveshimmin@manx.net

Steve will collate the points table early next week to publish prior to the final round of the series (10 August). Competitors will be able to get their tactics worked out!!

The handicap system will also be revamped for the next event. It has been quite difficult to get the handicaps correct this year largely due to the fact that standards have risen, which is great.

10th July

*We have received a message from the CA in regards to standards at the 10’s Time Trial League. It is safety related so please review the content and if necessary, please adjust your riding style accordingly. At best we are in danger of upsetting the local community and at worst it could cause a serious incident.

“Several complaints have been directed to me regarding dangerous riding and following cars in time trials.

  • Competitors must obey the rules of the road.
  • Competitors must obey marshals instructions.
  • No following vehicles allowed.

Complaints against specific riders have been made and the CA will follow these up. Most common is the practice of crossing the carriage way on the entry and exit of corners. This appears to becoming common place. This is a very dangerous practice and puts the marshals in a very ‘delicate’ position as they have to deal with complaining motorists (who are in the right). ”

*Bikestyle Events 1 and 2 were postponed due to bad weather. They have been rescheduled for Thursday 10 August (staged by EVCC) and Thursday 24 August (staged by MVW). Next race is Thursday 20 July, marshals are, Ged Power, Aaron Livesy, Colin Whiteway and Stuart Brown.

*Week 12 of the time trial league start sheet is here It is the Ramsey course and incorporates the 10 mile TT Championships.

1st July

*Club Member, Christine Barwell completed her first Ironman event in Nice on Sunday. She completed the 3.8km swim(1:08:52), 180km cycle(7:47:51) and 42.2km Marathon(5:26:24) in a total time of 14hrs 45mins 32secs. Outstanding achievement. The weather was hot with some thunderstorms on the Promenade around noon, when the elite athletes were starting to come in. The sea conditions were near perfect for the swim, which started at 06:30. A brisk sea breeze developed during the day that made it quite hard for the athletes coming in to the finish of the cycle. The cycle route was hilly, with a total of 2,000m of ascent, mostly in one climb. The run was along the Promenade des Anglais. There were 4 circuits of 10.4km each approximately. There were plenty of people suffering from dehydration when they reached the run and a number had to be rushed to hospital. Out of a total 1,067 starters, 875 completed the whole course with the last finisher coming in just 2 minutes before the 16hr cut-off. To view the results and some pics you can go on www.ironmanfrance.com.

*Peter O’Shea is riding the L’Etape du Tour again. Despite our Chairman’s utter lack of commitment to his Etape blog  page, he assures me that his training regime has gone to whatever plans he has, and now with just over a month to go, he is looking for sponsorship to ride L'Etape du Tour 2006, Stage 16 of this year's tour.

Peter says “I am raising money for a UK based charity, Get Kids Going. They assist disabled young people with mobility and encourage involvement in sport. I need to raise at least £800, so can I ask for your assistance. Donations can be made through my web page, www.justgiving.com/pos-etape2006 , or you can send cheque to me at Hillside, Strang Road, Union Mills IM4 4NW. Your help will be very much appreciated”.

I will start the ball rolling and pledge a tenner. More if he actually remembers to send updates for his blog!!

*Congratulations to Mark Cavendish on winning the scratch race in Melbourne today. A great ride from a fine young man.

*The Conditions weren't ideal for today’s 2 up 25 mile time trial. Although it was a bit cool, the brisk breeze from the east made the ride from the start and to Ramsey a bit tough. The ride after the turn was fast though. Tristen Gell and Ashley Whipp were the only team under the hour, with Gavin Quayle and Matt Holden putting a great ride to take second. Behind them were a close group of riders with 10 seconds between third and sixth. Unfortunately, Peter Kennaugh jnr. lost a crank and he and Chris Whorrall had to pull out. The results are here

*ENTRIES STILL FLOODING IN FOR IOM YOUTH CYCLE TOUR

Entries for the Sleepwell Hotels sponsored Isle of Man International Youth & Junior Tour topped the 100 mark this week. It’s the first time entries have hit the ton since the event was established only two years ago.

Some of the star riders confirmed so far include Jetse Bol, Pim Ligthart and Mitchell Huenders from the Netherlands who will race for Sleepwell Hotels, National Junior Ladies Champion Louise Maha of the Sutton CC, regular Revolution Future Stars riders Ross Yates and Tom Skubala and National Youth Circuit Race Champion Chris Worrall of the Manx Road Club. Add in most of the Regional British Cycling Talent Teams, a Welsh National Squad along with some strong teams from Team Scottish Provident Isle of Man, the Tour looks set to be a real classic event.

Further good news was received this week when Le Coq Sportif confirmed they will sponsor the Points Competition. The company whose rich heritage includes supplying leaders jersey's for the Tour de France will have a presence at the event, including representatives of their UK & Ireland distributors, Hedgehog Sports and a fully branded Mini Cooper car.

The events loyal title sponsors Sleepwell Hotels kindly provide special accommodation rates for travelling competitors and their families along with the Leaders Jerseys, race HQ/results centre and Prize Presentation.  The event has further backing from the Isle of Man Department of Tourism.

The Tour takes place 28 - 30 April. For more information along with entry forms go to www.youthtour.co.uk or contact organiser Oliver Last on 07624 456146. Entries close 9th April.

30th January

*The Tuesday night NSC training sessions have resumed at the NSC.

* Kirk Braddan church was full to overflowing for James Berry's funeral service.

The large congregation included representatives from British Cycling and club sponsors Scottish Provident International. Reporters from the local press and radio were also in attendance.

A group of James's Team Scottish Provident Isle of Man club mates followed the hearse on their bikes as the cortege made its way to the church under a police escort.

During the service there were moving and sometimes amusing tributes to James from his school teacher Mrs Duffy, children's cycling league organiser Dot Tilbury and IOM Cycling Association chairman Steve Shimmin.

After the church ceremony, James's team mates formed a guard of honour at the crematorium.

Despite the overwhelming sadness of the occasion, the huge turn out demonstrated just how many lives James had touched in his thirteen years. He will be greatly missed by everyone, but never forgotten.
