31st December

*Mark Christian (MRC) won the Bikestyle Hamper Race after dropping early breakaway partner Andrew Cook (MVW) towards the end of the 20 mile race over four laps of an excellent course based around Jurby. The handicap prize went to Steve Hull (MVW). Mark was unable to collect his hamper at the prize presentation as his father Peter rushed to the fore to collect what he believed to be a Camper from the bemused Burgers!

*Photographs of the race were taken by Dave Kneen at Manx Photos Online and can be viewed here

*There was a large turnout for last Sunday morning's commemorative ride in honour of James Berry. The riders cycled from the NSC to the scene of James's incident at Greeba where a minute's silence was held. Many thanks to everyone for making the event such a special occasion.

3rd August

A report by Steve Shimmin on last nights Bikestyle:

"What a great final race!! Perfect weather, a great circuit well signed and marshalled. Thanks to EVCC for running the event in particular Geoff Ennett for course marking and selling me a drive on lawn mower and Adrian Mooney for acting as Safety Officer.

All the groups worked really hard tonight. No messing around just hard graft through and off. All knew what had to be done to secure overall positions and race strategies were obviously thought out beforehand. Well maybe on the start line or when the gun was sounded as opposed to in the team bus (Steve Cregeens car)!

The handicapper faced untold unfounded arguments on the start line regarding the fairness of the start positions which all proved fruitless and were ignored anyway!! We really must introduce a ‘red card’s system for next year for arguing with an official!

Andy Jowett returned from childbirth and promptly retired at end of lap 2….understandable.

Other neo dads Bellhouse and Kirkwood faired a lot better particularly Kirkwood. Suspicions are aroused about what he’s taking; I reckon he’s stealing the baby’s bottles and drinking them himself!! Did you see his 10 time this week!

You can tell by the recent burst of offspring what cyclists do each October!!

Oh…back to the race.

It came down to those who really wanted it. Reports from the lead car and other observers said the Cregeen really worked hard and made his race with the series in mind. Mazzone was looking for his first victory in senior ranks and Dooley was playing domestique extraordinaire, marshalling and goading the lead group to work together.

The scratch group got up in the results but the sprint was taken stylishly by young Mazzone with Creggen in 2nd and Dooley wrapping up the top 3.

Andy Roche took 4th after driving the scratch group all night with other notable performances from Hatcher, Baxter, Gage and Kneen.

Special mention to a man in his first season Tom Hughes; who has performed consistently well throughout the series.

As you can see the final standings were really close. Sorry but I made an error when announcing the provisional series standings at the Creg, I miss- calculated Peter Gages total. Sorry mate.

All in all a great series which I have enjoyed coordinating thanks to all who entered and took part.

Thanks to Bikestyle for sponsoring the series …remember GO AND BUY SOMETHING!!

See ya next year folks".

The results of Sunday's 25 mile time trial championship are here. The race was won by Andrew Roche in a time of 52 minutes and 56 seconds. Graeme Hatcher was second with Gianni Epifani third. Tom Black was the top junior in 9th place. Top veteran was Dave Taylor in 6th place.

30th July

*Results from last weeks Bikestyle handicap are here. Young guns Mark Christian and Peter Kennaugh were first and second with the effervescent Peter Gage in third.

The report from Steve Shimmin:

What a race this turned out to be.

Conditions were very windy, strong headwind down the coast and a tailwind along the Ballamoar Straight leading to the bunch travelling at speeds of 36 miles per hour!

These conditions combined with that tortuous Col more commonly know as the Pill Box Road (total ascent 30ft) combined to produce the longest list of retirees this season.

Yellow jersey holder Steve Williams abandoned quoting “pins and needles”, other notable problems included “sore hamstring” (when rider was asked which one he responded “the one that hurts”), and at least 3 cases of undefined ‘bad back’ (sick note) syndrome!

The race itself was pretty hard held over the shorter Jurby South circuit. The strong scratch group got their heads down and immediately began to bring back the longer markers. The long marker groups seemed more intent on attacking each other rather than working together which made the scratch men’s job easier.

Mark Christian won the gallop from Peter Kennaugh Jnr and evergreen veteran Peter Gage. Warren Flynn, Colum O’Shea and visiting Junior Craig Eden made up the top six. Good to see 5 out of the top 6 places filled by riders under the age 20.

A man getting stronger as the season progresses is Steve Hull in 7th. Steve’s time trialling is improving as well.

Points table will be updated later.

Steve Shimmin

23rd July

*Sunday's Fred Kelly Memorial Road Race was won by Mark Cavendish from Andrew Roche with Mark Christian in third. The B race appears to have been won, somewhat surprisingly by Andrew Nicholson. Looking more and more like his son Chris every day, the rejuvenated Andy sped across the line in front of Eliot Moore and Steve Hull. Beer, chips and the arduous game of golf have clearly rolled back the years for Mr Nicholson. Either that, or in fact it was a typo in the results and Chris took the win. You be the judge! The results are here.

*The 25-mile Time Trial Championships, organised by The Manx Road Club on the 29th July has, due to a road closure at the prison been forced to change the course.

Signing on is now at The Wildlife Park from 8am. Starting at 9.01. The course now starts at Ballaugh Bridge and follows the T.T. Course to Sulby Bridge where it turns left and proceeds to St Judes X Roads whereupon it turns left again and proceeds to The Cronk. Turn right and proceed as far as the Killane “10” finish where there’s a “dead” turn. Retrace the course through the Cronk, along the Ballamoar straight and towards Ramsey. At the Ramsey “10” start there’s another “dead” turn. Retrace the route back to the Cronk for the 3rd time. At The Cronk turn left and proceed to the finish.

20th July

*Last nights Bikestyle round 5 results are here. Report from Steve Shimmin below:

"Group 1 worked really well together, Andy Beattie EVCC grabbed the win in the last few metres by a wheel width from Jonathan Cregeen MRC with a hard charging Matt Berry MVW in 3rd.

Newcomer Des Ware MRC rode strongly to take 4th , Mark Stewart MVW benefited from a proper warm up to take 5th with MMBC man Nick Faragher well pleased making up the top six.

Other notable rides came from newcomers David Garood in 16th, Thomas Mazzone just turned age 14 in 29th and Mark Cavendish T Mobile taking 9th in the gallop. Tour De France top 10 one week Bikestyle Handicap top 10 the next!!

Sincerely though it was great to see Cav out mixing it with novices and Veterans. Thanks Cav.

Congratulations also to Andy Jowett and Trevor Kirkwood who became dads this week".

*Results from Wednesday's 10's league are here. Andrew Roche took the win from Dave Taylor with Ashley Whipp in third. There was a notable ride from Colum O'Shea in 4th place who comprehensively thrashed club chairman and father Peter. Not for the first time.

*Due to impending road works at the Prison that the next 3 week's course will be Ramsey. Also due to complaints to the organiser at the Ramsey start, the board will be at a different location. You will now find it at the Whitebridge (Ramsey) car park by the Sulby river.

*At the latest CA Meeting it was noted that a number of riders are not wearing Cycling Helmets when on Training rides. The CA takes a dim view of this and strongly recommend that all riders should wear Cycling Helmets at all times when on your bicycle. Can our members take heed of this and please wear a cycling helmet. It's common sense really.

29th May

*The rescheduled "King of the Mountains" cycle challenge will take place on Sunday 10th June around a revised 108km course (with an optional short course at 91km).  This is a new kind of event for the IoM and is based on similar (and very popular) events in the UK - such as the Fred Whitton (Cumbria) and Etape du Dales (Yorkshire Dales).  Electronic tagging devices are used to record visits to 10 checkpoints around a tough but enjoyable course.  But this is a challenge with a difference - in that there are two optional cafe stops built into the route - where riders may take time out for refreshments without losing overall time!  The start will be from outside the Terminus Tavern on Douglas promenade anytime between 9am and 10am. The finish will be at the Ard Jerkyll cafe near Foxdale.  Entries will be taken on the day, but to reserve a place, there are registration forms at both Bike Style and Eurocycles.  Entry fee is £10.  Full details may be found on www.kotm.manxtimingsolutions.com.  Results will be posted on the web and a trophy will be presented to the rider posting the quickest time.

26th May

*The ratified results for event 2 of the Bikestyle series are here.

*The Cycling Association has received a letter of complaint from the DOT referring to an incident that occurred on Good Friday. Glencrutchery Road was closed while DOT were in the process of removing the top of the footbridge between Nobles Park and Douglas Borough Cemetery. Some club cyclists, on a club run, rode through the piece of road that was closed. The department are treating this as very serious, most particularly on safety grounds. It is also understood that some of the cyclists gave verbally abuse to the workmen. This is clearly unacceptable behaviour.

As road users we are supposed to adhere to the Rules of Road. As members of cycling clubs on the island, we need to show more respect for the law. If we are not seen to comply with the law on a continuing basis, we may jeopardise any applications for Road Closures for races to the DOT and give the cycling fraternity a very bad name. Anyone who flouts the law is effectively bringing their club and cycling into disrepute while breaching the Cycling Association's Code of Conduct. Disciplinary action will be taken if deemed necessary.

Please take heed of this. Let us enjoy our cycling and keep safe.

*IOM Young Guns show their stuff in Morecambe Bay 2 Day

Warren Flynn, Scott Flynn and Colum O'Shea competed in the Morecambe Bay 2 Day Stage race over the weekend for Team Isle of Man. The event consisted of a 2.3km prologue, a 48 Mile Road Race, a 1 hour plus 5 lap Crit and a 63 Mile Road Race. The first three stages were all held on Saturday with the final stage on Sunday. 49 out 62 riders made to the start line. The prologue, of 2.3km held at the Salt Ayre Sports Centre Circuit, was a straight forward affair with Warren being the highest placed Manx rider, with O'Shea a couple of seconds behind and Scott another second further back.

The second stage, a road race over 48 miles on an undulating course just each of Lancaster, was tough to say the least, with a strong head wind on the hilly section and heavy rainfall just before the start. A break of some 9 riders, some elite and 1st cats, broke off the front early. The Manx boys succeeded to make a break of their own on the last of 6 laps, coming into the finish together, a minute or so behind the leaders and 5 secs ahead of the main pack.

The first day's racing completed with a Crit at the Salt Ayre Sports Centre. The weather conditions had improved immensely although the wind was still quite strong. Despite the narrow circuit, the riders completed the race without any crashes. Throughout there were a number of attempted breaks, but each was reeled in with reasonable ease. Warren Flynn and O'Shea were one of those to attempt a break, without success. At the finish of the one hour and five laps, it was Scott Flynn who finished the leading Manxman, in 10th position. A tough first day.

The final stage was held in south Cumbria, near Ulverston, over a 6½ laps of a hilly course. This time, the wind took a rest, giving the opportunity for a much more competitive race. With 2 laps to go, Warren Flynn and three other riders made a break. They managed to gain some 2 minutes on the chasing group. It all came back together, though, on the finish line with one lap to go, when the break gas on the climb. It all came down to the bunch sprint on the climb. O'Shea lead the manx boys home in 8th place. Colum was 22nd, Scott 26th and Warren 37th overall on GC. Excellent performances all round. Warren's GC position was brought down by the performance in the final stage. Despite being off the front on the penultimate lap, the effort took it's toll and he finished behind the bunch.

A great weekend's work by the young lads, particular as they were up against some class opposition with elites and category 1 & 2 riders.

*Ollie Last has details of the Manx Youth Tour marshals situation. Please note as follows and please help out if you possibly can:

The times for marshaling are as follows:

It is really importent we get as many marshals as posible for this event to make it a success. I appreciate it will be taking up peoples weekend, however it is one weekend of the year for a major Road Cycling event.
Please can you try and collate as may helpers as possible and let me know names and contact details.
If we can not find the adaqate marshals we require as per the BC Risk Assesments, we will not be able to run any of the stages.

Many thanks

2nd April

*An appeal here from Ollie Last who does a superb job of organising the Manx Youth Tour. Please have a read and help out if you can:

"I would like to draw your attention to the IoM Youth Tour which takes place 4-6 May (only 4 weeks away).

As far as Manx Cycling is concerned, we are going to be put directly in the public spot light as a result of this event, and its absolutely critical that everyone involved with cycling gets behind this and helps out in someway.

We have in excess of around 240 off Island competitors coming over for this and when you factor in their parents, Team Managers and hangers on, we are looking at around 800 people over. Include 30+ local competitors into this as well with their families. - And this is just people directly involved with the event.

With regard to local spectators, Isle of Man Newspapers are producing a 4 page mini programme which will be in next months Outlook Magazine, and will go out on 24 April to every single IoM house hold. We anticipate that this will attract quite a lot of spectators, especially to the Kermesses around Douglas and Port Erin on the Saturday & Sunday. It is also being filmed for Sky Sports and Cycling.TV. There will also be some very important people invited to the stages, including Political figures, Sponsors, Senior BC Officers and Officials & National Press, all of whom are keen to see Manx Cycling continue to grow.

With the above in mind, we are going to need lots of Marshals/Stewards and Helpers for all of the stages. If you have not already been asked to help out in someway, please can you contact either myself or Steve Honeybone (who is collating marshals) with times you are available, email address and a contact number. (Schedule below). Steve has already contacted some other organisations to see if they can help (such as the Army Cadets) to boost numbers, but ultimately its the involvement of cyclists who understand how cycle races work which we need.

I appreciate that some people may not want to give up their weekend, however this is only a one off event and we really need your support to make this a big success.

The times we require people from are as follows:

Friday 4 May - Loch Promenade 6.15pm until 9.00pm
Saturday 5 May - Tour of the West Circuit - 8.15am until 12pm
Saturday 5 May - Ellerslie Circuit - Marown - 1.15pm until 4.30pm
Saturday 5 May - Douglas Kermesse (Town Centre) 6.00pm until 9.15pm
Sunday 6 May - Port Erin Kermese - 9am until 4pm

All helpers will be watered and fed on the Saturday and Sunday for free.

If you need any further information, contact me either on this email or call me on 456146. Event specific information can be found on www.youthtour.co.uk

Many thanks for your help!
Ollie

22nd January

*There has been some discussion / confusion as to whether insurance is a requirement at the Wheelers run NSC Tuesday training nights. It would seem that BC Gold or Silver Membership or being a member of the BTA (British Triathlon Assoc) would fulfil the requirement. The subject is to be discussed fully at the club's Open Meeting and Signing on Night this Thursday where hopefully the situation can be clarified. With the Chairman's agreement, in the meanwhile MVW would recommend third party insurance for all riders (both at the NSC and road rides). For this week at least, there is no mandatory requirement for BC, TLI, BTA etc membership in order to ride around the NSC perimeter track in a traffic free environment.

A New Year message from the Chairman:

May I wish you all a very Happy New Year. I hope you all had a great Christmas. Now you probably realise that it was too good. But you can make it right and get out to do those winter miles to prepare you for the season to come, which is just around the corner really. Some of you will be going to find the warmer climes to train. I hope you enjoy.

2006 was a brilliant year for the club. As I said at the AGM, we were the top club locally, winning quite an amount of events. Our juvenile members, in TSP, have had a quite an astounding year, with great performances at U14 and U16 level. We have to be sure that this is maintained and that we in the Wheelers offer those leaving TSP some continuity from within. With some new blood coming from our Juvenile ranks joining us this year, we can look to maintain our strong local position. We cannot fail these guys. We need to make the senior ranks of our club the obvious route for our juvenile members.

The Island Games will be held in Rhodes in July. Selection for the Road and Mountain Bike competitors will be made by 15 April. Good luck to all of you who aspire to represent the Island at this and other off Island events, such as the Gorey 3-day at Easter and the Tour of Wales in July, amongst others.

The local calendar will be available shortly. The first road event of the year will be the Shoprite Challenge on 25th February. The first competitive event will be the Fletcher Trophy on 4th March followed by the first Road Race of the season, the Teare Trophy on 11th March. This year sees the introduction of a Road Race Series which includes 7 events. There are points available in each race which will count for the final positions. It not required that you ride every event, but it will increase your chances if you do so. You must enter the series to be included in the final tally, although you can ride any of the events on an individual basis, if that is what you choose. Included in the RR series will be the Future Stars Series, which is intended for those riders who have previously races in the 'B' category events. A similar number of events and points are available. Riders entered in either series will be asked to stand down for one of the events so that he/she can marshal. You will have the opportunity to find a substitute if you wish to ride.

To ensure that the events are a success this, may I encourage that all members marshal at some point during the season. We need your support at all levels to ensure that our sport remains strong.

Good luck with 2007 and keep safe.

Peter

*The Tuesday night NSC winter riding sessions resume next week on the 23rd January. Weather permitting, proceedings start at 18.30 and are to be endured until 20.00 by which time you can either keep up with Mr Kennaugh, Bellis, Christian, Whorrall et al or collapse trying. Of course this pertains to the junior members of the families rather than the older generations!! In the case of Mr Christian, tricycle entries are not permitted. The junior and associates  coaching session at the Harriers club room will take place immediately after the riding session at 20.00 unless bad weather forces the cancellation of the riding session. In that case the coaching session for the juniors will take place at 18.30. That is the time and NOT the dodgy holiday club for impressionable teenagers, twenty and thirty somethings !

1st January

* Despite the inclement weather, there was an excellent turn out of around 60 cyclists for last Sunday morning's ride-out in memory of James Berry. The riders cycled out to the scene of James' tragic incident in Greeba where they stopped for a moment's reflection before heading out west and returning home via the Tynwald Mills cafe. We would like to thank the organisers and everyone who turned out in such bad weather.
